The New Terminal has been officially opened on June, 6th 2004. The project of a renovation, designed by the well known architect Willem Brower and the engineering office Geogramma, begun in 2000. During the last three years, investments for 46 million euro have been realised and, in the next 3 years, investments in infrastructures and security for 35 millions euro have been forecasted. The air terminal now covers a total surface of 42.000 sqm, three times the size of the original facility. It now also boasts 40 check in desks, 15 exit , 5 fingers and a large 2.200 sqm shopping area which also offers a range of services. The new terminal has been designed to cater to the needs of 4.5 million passengers per year. Its modern elegant architecture blends beautifully into the surrounding countryside. The new facility ensures that travellers time there will be spent as pleasantly and comfortably as possible.

The airport is open 24 hours a day. The runway is 2,445 metres long and 45 metres wide (standard ICAO class A-LIEO: Long International Flights).The air terminal can deal with 4.5 million passengers annually. There are no restrictions at the airport and no specific environmental obstacles, making take-offs and landings smooth and simple even at peak times.

The airport boasts a large 2,200 square metre shopping centre and a 1,700-vehicle car park. Airport services: car hire terminal, tour operator offices and desks, ticket counter and information office. The Corte Smeralda shopping area is a major new addition to the airport, offering added value both for passengers and the surrounding area, as well as promoting the integration of the airport into the local community.

The University of Sassari runs its Degree Course in Tourism, Business and Marketing from the mezzanine area of the airport. The University premises covers around 1,000 square metres, consisting of lecture rooms, laboratories, staff offices, a secretarial office and a 250-seat main lecture theatre. This initiative has been shaped in order to increase the local tourist business orientation and culture. It represents a tangible exercise of integration between the Airport, seen as “tourist industry”, and the local business community in order to encourage, promote and develop culture and economical expansion.

General Aviation provides handling for private aircraft, offering all of the necessary services to planes, passengers and crews. The dedicated Air terminal was recently extended and modernised to meet and exceed international standards of comfort. Eccelsa Aviation, a business division of Geasar S.p.A. was created to provide high quality services aimed at meeting all of the operational needs of this specific sector. The terminal is one of Europe’s largest, covering 1,600 square metres. It also has a large passenger waiting area with five elegantly appointed lounges, a modern crew service area and an elegant VIP lounge. The terminal also boasts a relaxation area for pilots and a shopping area featuring local regional products.
